"Action Planning helped us research and target and a number of trusts for two major capital appeals. Their expertise and bid writing skills helped successfully generate income for both appeals and was great return on investment."

VICKY REES, HEAD OF FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATIONS, COSMIC (CHILDREN OF ST MARY'S INTENSIVE CARE)

Background:
COSMIC (Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care) was founded in 1994 to raise money for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. The unit treats approximately 400 desperately ill children each year. Action Planning has done a lot of bid writing for the charity with much success and so COSMIC approached us again when the need arose to fund a major programme of refurbishment to create accommodation for the families of the unit’s young patients.

Brief:
COSMIC’s small fundraising team wanted our help in increasing the number of tenders they were able to submit. We were required to explore funding opportunities and compile applications ready for submission.

Process:
We assigned one of our Consultants, Jane Walker, who recently rejoined Action Planning having begun her fundraising career with us 15 years ago. Jane invested time getting to know and understand COSMIC and the nature of the refurbishment project. She then set about researching trusts to apply to for funding and developed the individual grant applications ready for COSMIC to submit.

Outcomes:
COSMIC’s fundraising team were able to increase their bid output significantly, as a result of which the charity was recently awarded £200,000 from Garfield Weston Foundation.

Consultant’s insight:
Additional outsourced capacity can give an appeal a real boost.
