Derek Smith

Derek has over 15 years senior management, trustee and consultancy experience providing a wide range of not for profit services. This has included national charities, Further Education, Housing and Local Government where he has overseen a number of major reviews leading to service improvements and year on year growth. His work is underpinned by a commitment to improve the life opportunities of disadvantaged communities.   

He is used to working in complex social and political environments. He is a skilled and experienced negotiator and manager of substantial contracts. Previous experience has included Director of Services at the RNID and Assistant Director of Education in Lambeth where he was responsible for the commissioning and management of over £10m p.a. of voluntary sector contracts.   

He has had senior responsibility in local authorities for the partnership and development of the voluntary sector and has provided capacity building consultancy, mentoring and training. He has extensive fund-raising and tendering experience as a manager and consultant with Lottery, Trusts, European and Statutory sectors.   

Derek has a strong management background in education, training, community development, care and youth services and has delivered a number of courses including fund-raising and training the trainers.
