Governance Review by charity consultants action planning

Governance Reviews

Identifying room for improvement

Our governance experts can carry out an objective assessment of all aspects of your governance to help you identify areas of divergence or friction and offer recommendations for positive development.

Alongside traditional methodologies, such as one-to-one interviews and facilitation of interactive training sessions with Board members, we also offer an online questionnaire, in partnership with Digi-BoardTM, which provides a quick and cost-effective way to gain a common understanding of your governance strengths and weaknesses. Data from the questionnaire is mapped against the Charity Governance Code and presented in a clear and concise format, which we can then help you to analyse and channel into prioritised actions.

Board and trustee training by action planning's governance team

Board Development

Building a stronger mix of trustees

Trustee training and development are crucial for your organisation to run at maximum efficiency, and yet we recognise that because of tight resources and limited time, cost-effective and efficient training delivery is essential. Our approach is, therefore, tailored to meet the very specific needs of each client.

Our expert governance consultants and trainers understand the different characteristics, challenges and opportunities that make every Board a unique entity. They can work with you to provide bespoke training and development for trustees, designed to develop a mindful, skilled and responsive Board that acts as a critical friend, while empowering staff to succeed.

Away Day Facilitation by charity specialists

Awayday Facilitation

Stimulating a better understanding away from the office

The all-important relationship between senior management and the Board can benefit hugely from an awayday, planned and run by an objective third party like Action Planning. We specialise in putting together stimulating, task-based awaydays that address your organisation’s specific challenges and yield workable outcomes. By using our expert facilitators, you can focus on participating fully during the day.

By taking teams out of the normal working environment and freeing them from day-to-day responsibilities, we encourage greater creativity and interaction, sharing of ideas and knowledge, strengthening of relationships and motivation around the cause. Our awaydays are particularly effective for building unity within leadership teams and strengthening the relationship between Chair and CEO.

Risk Management – Identifying and mitigating threats

Risk Management

Identifying and mitigating threats

Threats to your organisation such as reputational damage, loss of income and adverse regulatory changes can all be mitigated by having a sound risk management policy in place. For larger charities this is obligatory but we strongly recommend it for every not-for-profit.

We can draw on our years of experience in the sector to help you identify and assess all the potential risks and put together a clear risk management policy, agreed by your Board and senior management. We can also help with the process of periodic monitoring and reviewing, as well as compiling risk reports.

Crisis Management Life ring support for Charities

Crisis Management

Helping you respond to the unexpected

If a crisis arises within your organisation, it’s time to act fast. The crisis itself may come out of the blue but that doesn’t mean to say you can’t be prepared. You may not know what’s coming round the corner but you can have a response plan ready, including data and financial security measure, legal advice and PR.

We have crisis management experts who can sit down with you and identify all the things that could have a negative impact on your charity, operationally, financially and reputationally, and put together a plan of action for any eventuality.

Governance 1.01 - The Challenge of the next steps

Governance 1.01

Getting your charity set up from scratch

When you’re setting up a new charity, or making a step change in your structure and scope, poring over the Charity Governance Code to see how you need to comply is probably the last thing you have time for. Wouldn’t it be great if someone who knew all that could just come and tell you what you need to do?

That’s exactly what our Governance 1.01 service offers: experienced charity leaders who can save you all that reading and advise you on how to structure your organisation to comply with the regulations and deliver the best results for your beneficiaries.
